Windows Dial-up
Configuration
How to install and configure dial-up networking in
Windows
There are two ways (at least) to install and configure
dial-up networking in Windows on your computer for
access to TaosNet/NewMex. If you are connecting to the
Internet for the first time, the Internet Setup Wizard
is the easiest. The second method, Create and Configure
Dialer is more detailed and accesses the control panels
and settings that are minimally taken care of by the
Setup Wizard.
Internet Setup Wizard
Since Windows installations can vary greatly on
different computers and manufacturers, the most
reliable way to find and launch the Internet Setup
Wizard is to run the Internet SetupWizard via your
Start button.
- Click on Start,
- then click Run,
- then type inetwiz and click OK.
- This will find and execute the Internet Setup
Wizard on your computer.
Several screens will appear as the wizard leads you
through the basic setup. At some point, Windows may
attempt to install needed drivers, so make sure you've
got your installation disks or CD handy! Click Next after
completing the info requested in each box. Also depending
on your configuration, the order and some extra steps may
be required.
1. Welcome - Click
Next. If you are curious and want more
information, click Help, but it is not necessary.
2. How to Connect - Click button
Connect Using my phone line.
3. Phone Number - Type in the TaosNet
phone number: 751-9590 or 737-0000. Be
sure to uncheck the box titled Dial using area code
and country code, as it will be a local call.
4. Username & Password - Type in
your username and password. Both need to be entered all
lower-case, (if your email address is
bob@newmex.com, then bob will be your username).
5. Connection Name - This will be the
name for the connection, you can type in whatever you
would like to call your connection here, we recommend
"TaosNet".
6. Click Finish - You're Finished,
Congratulations!
Other Information: - If your computer
asks you if you would like to "setup an internet mail
account now," and you would like to use Outlook
Express, please view our Outlook Express
Documentation, (this requires Adobe
Acrobat Reader).
Mail Servers - Configuring your email
program to check mail. You will need to specify the
following mail servers inside your email program.
-
Incoming Mail Server: mail.newmex.com
-
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.newmex.com
-
Usenet News Server: news.taosnet.com
An alternative to configuring and email program such
as Outlook Express, will be for you to visit our webmail
page at http://webmail.newmex.com.
Alternately you may also use a program of your choice, or
download one from our Downloads
Page.
TaosNet's Multiple Phone Numbers-
TaosNet provides dialup service using two different
access servers. These dial-up servers enable us to help
you get a more stable connection and possibly better
connect speeds. These servers have different
manufacturers such that dialing 751-9590 connects x2
56K hardware and the 737-0000 connects to 56K flex
hardware. Both adhere to the V.90 standard. Depending
on your brand of modem and your phone line conditions,
you may or may not see different performance levels
between these two numbers. We recommend trying both of
our dial-up servers, (751-9590 and 737-0000) to
determine which server will connect better. Return to setup info
IP Address: automatically assigned by our
server.
Primary DNS: 209.188.112.3
Secondary DNS: 63.81.160.11
